How Can I Have a Close Relationship with God?

First Things First, Do You Currently Have A Relationship With God?

Before we can have a close relationship with God, first and foremost, you first must have a relationship with Him. Let’s look at what the Bible says about establishing a relationship with God.
John 14:6 KJV – 6) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Romans 10:9-10 KJV 9) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10) For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
John 3:16-17 – 16)For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17)For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
As we look at these verses, first we must understand that Jesus Christ is the only way to God and to establish a relationship with God, we must place our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. To do this as Romans 10 informs us, we must believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins but rose again. This essentially means that we realize that we are a sinner in need of a Saviour. As a result, we realize that God sent His only begotten son Jesus to die for our sins but we also believe and confess that Jesus Rose from the dead. Lastly, we confess him as Lord and saviour. You can think about it like this.
A | Admit we are a sinner in need of a Saviour
B | Believe that God sent Jesus Christ to die for the sins of the world, and that God raised him from the dead
C | Confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

So Now That You Have a Relationship with God, How Do I Grow Closer to God?

1.  Spend Time With God In Prayer
Luke 18:1 KJV – 1)And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
Prayer is communication with God, and it is something that needs to be a regular part of our lives. Think about it like this. For those that have a spouse or even have children, imagine what your relationship would be like if you hardly ever spoke to your children or never spent time talking to your spouse. I know for a fact, that it would greatly impact the quality of the relationship and in some cases cause the relationship to come to a point where it will be greatly jeopardized. Communicating with God is important and something I urge to you do on a daily basis. Pray is important. Prayer is powerful. Prayer changes things, and prayer is communicating with God.
2. Read The Word God & Obey The Word Of God.
Psalm 119:11 KJV – 11) Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee
Colossians 3:16 KJV- 16) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
John 15:10 KJV –  10) If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
The Bible is the word of God. Some like to say that the Bible is “Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth”. God gives us His word so that we can know his will, inform us of His divine will for mankind, to let us know about the great gift he has given us in Jesus Christ, and so that the world will know the truth and hopefully place their faith in Jesus Christ. In addition, the Bible gives us wisdom concerning things to come as well as provides insights in the lives of the people of old on how they either trusted God, or rebelled. We can gleam from their lives and the stories of the Bible of God’s faithfulness as well as his hatred for sin and how sin affects people even in the days and times that we live. If is for this reaso, I encourage you to begin to read the Bible and obey what it says.

How To Start Reading The Bible

  • – Read A Proverb A Day. There are 31 Proverbs and at most there are 31 days in a month. Read one provide each and every day.
  • – Start reading the Book of John. John is good because it was written so that we can know who Jesus Christ is. It is a great book to start with for new believers.
  • – Read The Gospels.
  • – Read The Bible from Genesis to the book of Revelation
  • – Read the Bible Chronologically

Now matter how you decide to read the Bible, it is important that we Obey what it says.

James 1:22-24 NLT – 22)But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23)For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24)You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.

Seek God First

Matthew 6:33 KJV – 33)But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you
James 4:8 KVJ – Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
When we look at these verses we see that we must have a mindset to seek God and seek him First. As we make an effort to grow closer to God he will begin to draw closer to us. With that being said, we must remember that God doesn’t leave us, we leave him.  That is why it is important that we seek God first. There are so many things that will try to take away our focus off of God. We must not allow anything to take that focus away from us. God desires to be first in our lives above anybody or anything else.

Repent And Turn From Sin

1 John 1:9 KJV – 9)If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
As we begin to spend time in God’s Word, and spend time with Him in Prayer, the Holy Spirit will begin to show you areas in your life where you need to repent of sin. We must remember that sin is what separates man from God. Because we want to please God and have a close relationship with Him, when we see that there are areas in our lives where we have fallen short we must repent, move forward, and trust God as Lord and Saviour of our lives.

Prioritize Fellowship With Other Believers

Hebrews 10:23-25 KJV – 23) Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
24) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
25) Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Here at Commission Outreach Church, we provide numerous opportunities for fellowship in person as well as through our online ministry. Conclusion
Our relationship with God has to be the most important thing within our lives. As we spend time in the Word, spend time with God in prayer with a mindset to constantly seek God and his will first within our lives, these things we help us to grow and maintain a close intimate relationship with God.
